Common Name(s): n/a
Color(s): white
Form and Size: The stems of tuberose are 24 – 36 inches long. There are waxy and tubular flowers that are 1 – 2 inches long at stem ends. The star-shaped flowers are in pairs and there are up to 30 blooms on each spike.
Vase Life: 7 – 10 days, sometimes longer
Availability: year-round
Care Instructions: Remove any leaves from the bottom of the stem that will fall below the water line, cut stems under water and place in fresh water with flower food.
History and Usage: A member of the Agavaceae (agave) family, tuberose originated in Mexico. Its botanical name comes from the word “polios” which is Greek for grey and “anthos” which is Greek for flower. Because this flower has such a nice scent, which is comparable to the gardenia, it has been used in perfumes for many years.
Points of Interest: Relatives of tuberose include century plant, yucca, dracaena and New Zealand flax. To Victorians, this flower represented dangerous love.
