Form and Size: The stems of king protea are of various lengths and have leathery foliage. Its flowers are in a dome-like shape with stiff bracts surrounding them. They have a 12-inch diameter. Some compare its look to a crown.
Vase Life: 10 – 20 days
Availability: year-round
Care Instructions: Remove leaves from the bottom of the stem, cut under water and place in fresh water with flower food.
History and Usage: A member of the Proteaceae (protea) family, king protea originated in South Africa. The botanical name, protea, is named after Greek sea god, Proteus, who had the power of prophecy. Protea is beautiful in contemporary arrangements and also in dried arrangements.
Points of Interest: Relatives of king protea include grevillea, leucodendron, leucospermum and banksia. King protea became the national flower of South Africa in 1976.
