Coreopsis

Botanical Name and Pronunciation: Coreopsis grandiflora (cor-ee-OP-sis gran-di-FLO-ra)

Form and Size: The wiry stems of coreopsis are 18 – 24 inches long. The flower head is 1 – 3 inches wide with a small center and showy petals around it.
Vase Life: 5 – 10 days
Availability: summer
Care Instructions: Remove any leaves at the bottom of the stem, cut under water and place in fresh water with flower food.
History and Usage: A member of the Compositae (aster) family, coreopsis originated in central and southeastern United States. Its name comes from the word “koris” which is Greek for bug and “opsis” which indicates resemblance. This is in reference to its seeds looking like ticks. That is also where its common name, tickseed, came from.
Points of Interest: Relatives of coreopsis include chrysanthemum, dahlia, marigold and zinnia.
