Common Name(s): Wormwood, Sagebrush
Color(s): gray foliage, yellow or white flowers
Form and Size: Artemisia has small flowers with wooly looking foliage. It also has a very overpowering aroma that comes from the foliage.
Vase Life: 4 – 10 days
Availability: year-round
Care Instructions: Cut stems under water and place in fresh water with flower food.
History and Usage: A member of the Compositae (aster) family, it originated in the Northern hemisphere, mostly arid regions. At the end of the 19th century, the oil from artemisia was cited as the most important ingredient in absinthe, a green alcoholic beverage that was famous among philosophers and poets. Absinthe was said to induce violent rages and hallucinations.
Points of Interest: Poe and Rimbaud were avid absinthe drinkers. The original absinthe is still available in Europe, while a less potent version can be found in the United States.
